My sister, 22, actually uses FC. We were actually sort of in the middle of the controversy. One minute we were learning to type with her (her first words to mom were "I love you"

, she was even typing at school, and going to mainstream classes up into middle school, then right in the middle school days FC almost became a bad word. FC was basically banned in the schools and anyone using it was attacked verbally, being told it was akin to a Ouija board. We still occasionally hear this with quite a bit of venom.
We still use it in our family and it works quite well, in fact about 30 minutes ago Siri was yelling very painfully in her room so mom asked if she needed an IBprofen and how much. She typed yes and then one, so we gave her one, and a few minutes later she went back to bed.
Basically, we figure we don't give a damn about controversy if it works for us. If it lets her tell us what is bothering her that's all we care about.
The danger is still that someone working with your child could force her hand to go where they want it to go (though Siri would probably beat the crap out of someone that did that with her), but truthfully you really shouldn't have people working with them that you don't trust anyways. I mean, I understand why it's not used as a way to testify in curt, but personal use shouldn't be completely chucked off the table.
Another fear seems to be that child using FC also might lie about something, but verbal children lie as well. It doesn't mean we should duckt tape their mouths closed.
So really, try it and see if it works for you. No one else matters right now but you and your daughter.
