IRSF is dedicated to helping develop better treatments to improve the quality of life of individuals with Rett syndrome and ultimately find a “cure.” Using the new IRSF Research Flash, we will be highlighting Grant opportunities within IRSF and bring awareness to other funding sources for basic and translational research. With this in mind, we will send out information that will help investigators apply to other agencies with the ultimate goal of increasing the amount of research dollars into Rett syndrome research and driving IRSF’s own mission of bringing “Research to Reality”.

IRSF Grant Opportunities

IRSF is requesting for proposals for the first cycle of the Translation Research Grant Program that includes HeART (Help Accelerate RTT Therapeutics) and ANGEL (Advanced Neurotherapeutic Grant of Excellence) grant awards to promote the development and testing of therapeutics to treat and reverse Rett syndrome (RTT) and its symptoms.

Cycle 1
		Letter of Intent due: March 1, 2012
		Invitation of full applications by: March 16, 2012

NIH Clinical Trial Planning Grant Program (R34)

Today, we would like to bring awareness to you about the NIH Clinical Trial Planning Grant Program (R34) as you are building your clinical research program for Rett syndrome research. While IRSF’s HeART and ANGEL awards will help generate the preliminary data for your translational research program, the NIH R34 will bring support to the infrastructure of a future clinical trial.

This program supports development of Phase III clinical trials including the following:

  Establishment of the research team
  Development of tools for data management and research oversight
  Definition of recruitment strategies
  Finalization of the protocol
  Preparation of an operations/procedures manual

The R34 Clinical Trial Planning Grant is NOT designed for the collection of preliminary data or the conduct of pilot studies to support the rationale for a clinical trial.

The planning grant is designed to permit early peer review of the rationale and design of the proposed clinical trial and to provide support for the development of a detailed Manual of Procedures (MOP), including all elements essential to the launching of a trial.

There are specific institutes and centers of the NIH that will accept Investigator-Initiated Applications for the R34:

  National Eye Institute (NEI)
  National Institute on Aging (NIA)
  National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
  National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)*
  National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
  Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS)

*For Rett-related research, please note that the NICHD is an institute that accepts the R34 grant application. .
