Michaela is our Rett angel. Michaela has faced many challenges. She has a great sense of humor and loves to tease her friends, family and teachers. Seizures can make her days more difficult. Michaela is a tough kid who is as bright as her smile. Michaela had posterior spinal fusion surgery spring 2008. In August of 2007 Michaela was granted a special wish from Make-A-Wish. Her service dog, Coal, has given her confidence, pride and comfort. They are good friends. Michaela looks forward to becoming a teenager and is good at rolling her eyes, especially at her parents! Michaela loves 6th grade, books, music, TV, animals and most of all her family and friends. This year Michaela is in band. She enjoys the drums, like her brother. Michaela has been given the opportunity to march with the band, which she thoroughly enjoys. We are fortunate to have a great school district and staff who encourage Michaela. She is not mobile on her own, but is able to utilize a gait trainer. Michaela works hard to communicate with her eye gaze, hands and facial expressions. She knows so much, but is physically limited. This year our family lost Grandma Webster to stomach cancer. Grandma did so much to help Michaela with her daily life and with the many doctor appointments. Michaela proudly went to a few of Grandma’s appointments and held her hand. Michaela knew better than anyone what Grandma was experiencing. Michaela was able to tell Grandma how important she was to her with the writings she did at school. Grandma was one of Michaela’s biggest advocates. Michaela is an insightful, determined, big-hearted kid who has shown many the gifts we’ve been given. She is our ray of sunshine that has a contagious laugh. In honor of Michaela, please help us inform others about Rett Syndrome and continue the fight to develop treatments and someday a cure. Here’s to you Sissy Sue!
