Allison Thagard
Age: 3 years old
Parents: Robin & Jason Thagard

On April 22, 2005, we were blessed with a daughter- Allison Elaine Thagard. We loved her at first sight and our dream of having a family was complete. Allison was an easy, happy baby who met all her early milestones. Over time we became concerned about her development- suddenly gone from us was our child who played with dolls and toys, waved bye-bye, babbled, and imitated our actions. In July of 2007, after many tests and doctors, we learned the devastating news -our beautiful daughter was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome. For many dark months we mourned and worried about her future. Through the support of our families and the International Rett Syndrome Foundation, we have been able to accept who she is- a beautiful, sweet, and happy child who may never speak words, but communicates clearly her wants, needs, and her love for us. We have learned to see her as Allison, instead of a girl with Rett Syndrome.

We are thankful that Allison seems to be different than most Rett girls and has retained many skills. Her regression was thankfully short, occurring between 17 and 21 months of age. She can still walk, and even runs! She can feed herself finger foods, and is learning to swim. She has maintained most of her hand use, with the exception of fingering her blanket which we call “bebe”. Allison needs help with daily tasks such as dressing, grooming and bathing, eating, and is not potty trained yet, though we are working on it. She loves to watch television and her favorite shows are Jack’s Big Music Show, Blue’s Clues, Elmo’s World, and the Wonder Pets. She wrestles and plays, laughing and squealing with her Daddy. She no longer sits on Mommy’s lap to read books as she once did, but she maintains close proximity so she can bounce on the bed while she listens and looks. While much of her time is spent deep in her thoughts or focused on her surroundings, we live for the moments when she truly connects with us. Most of the time she acts like a typical three year old, and we know she knows more than she lets on.

Today, Allison is 3 ½ years old. She attends a wonderful special needs preschool where she receives speech, occupational, physical, and music therapy. Allison also receives behavior therapy after school one day a week. We are very hopeful that she will continue to make gains as she grows. Long ago we stopped comparing her to other children her age or even other girls with Rett Syndrome. We believe that Allison can and will do more. And we will never give up hope for a cure or meaningful treatment.

Overall, Allison has taught us the true meaning of love and broadened our minds to accept people of all ability levels. She has made us better people and taught us about patience, courage, and faith

Allison, this toast is for you! We believe in you and love you very much!!
